Swenson Captures Mid-Amateur Championship, Capson in the Classic

CALDWELL- The third and final round of the Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship and Classic was played Sunday. TimberStone Golf Course played host to the tournaments and proved a formidable test for the competitors.

In the Mid-Amateur Championship, three golfers began the day at under par, Alan Barnhardt, Brian Swenson, and Chris Reinke. The three had separated themselves from the rest of the field in the first and second rounds. Barnhardt, who led following the first and second round, was the first to falter and fall down the leaderboard. Barnhardt’s first tee shot flew out of bounds and was never able to recover, finishing two-over on the championship. While Barnhard was slipping down the leaderboard Daniel Stewart and Jesse Hibler were firing away and moving up. Both Hibler and Stewart shot five-under in the final round, Stewart finishing at three-under and Hibler at one-under. Chris Reinke started hot with a three-under front nine, but with a 40 on the back Reinke finished the championship at two-under. Brian Swenson began his day sitting at third. Swenson was able to outlast the charges of Hibler and Stewart by shooting a one-under. Swenson’s championship total of six-under was enough to take home the 2017 Mid-Amateur Championship. Swenson was a member of the winning Idaho PNGA Cup team, which was played at TimberStone earlier this year. For the entire leaderboard of the Championship visit the tournament page HERE.

As for the Classic Tournament, there was not the movement in the leaderboard which we saw in the championship. Doug Capson entered the final round with a three-shot lead. Capson did not simply cruise to a victory on Sunday, he fired a four-over. Capson’s 76 was the lowest score tallied in all of the classic. His final round pushed his final lead to eleven-strokes to claim the 2017 Mid-Amateur Classic title. For the entire leaderboard of the Classic view the tournament page HERE.

The women’s tournament was 36-holes and finished on Saturday. With three past champions in the field of the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship the players knew they would have to perform to come away with the title. Karen Darrington came into the final round with a two-shot lead above Kareen Markle. Darrington was not quick out of the gate in the second and final round of the championship, tallying a six-over 42. With Markle shooting 40 on the front the two past champions were tied going into the back nine. The two both went two-over on holes ten through seventeen. With the championship on the line on the eighteenth hole Markle was able to make a par. But, Darrington was able birdie the par four to seal her third straight victory of the championship. Darrington’s three titles ties Markle for the most in championship history. For the full results of the championship visit the tournament page HERE.
