Barnhardt and Darrington Take Lead in Mid-Am
CALDWELL-The state’s best in Mid-Amateur (twenty-five years and older) golfers took on TimberStone Golf Course for the first round of the championship.
Thirty-eight men entered in the Men’s Championship and Alan Barnhardt of Ketchum set the bar in the first-round shooting four-under. Barnhardt’s round included a four-under 32 on the front nine. Barnhardt only holds a one-shot lead with Chris Reinke and Brian Swenson carding three-under. Kody Rathe came into the clubhouse with an even par round, putting him in fourth place. A group of four finished up the first round at two-over including defending champion Daniel Stewart. With 36 more holes to be played in the championship there is still plenty of time for movement in the leaderboard. On the women’s side of the tournament a strong field of three past champions yielded results as expected. Karen Darrington leads the pack after shooting a first round seventy-six. Darrington is looking for her third straight Mid-Amateur Championship. Trailing Darrington is Kareen Markle. Markle has captured three titles winning in 2011, 2013 and 2014 and after tallying a seventy-eight is in good position heading into the final round. The Mid-Amateur Classic is a concurrent tournament for players with a handicap index of 7.5 or higher. In the Classic Doug Capson grabbed the first-round lead. But with many players closely behind Capson the next 36 holes will be a test for all in the field. For the full leaderboard of the Classic and second round tee times visit the tournament page HERE.
