Darrington Grabs Third Straight Mid-Am
CALDWELL- With three past champions in the field of the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship the players knew they would have to perform to come away with the title. Karen Darrington came into the final round with a two-shot lead above Kareen Markle. Darrington was not quick out of the gate in the second and final round of the championship, tallying a six-over 42. With Markle shooting 40 on the front the two past champions were tied going into the back nine. The two both went two-over on holes ten through seventeen. With the championship on the line on the eighteenth hole Markle was able to make a par. But, Darrington was able birdie the par four to seal her third straight victory of the championship. As for the men’s championship, the final group of Alan Barnhardt, Brian Swenson, and Chris Reinke increased the gap between themselves and the rest of the field. Barnhart fired a two-under 70, putting himself at six-under for the championship. A 70 from Swenson got himself five-under and an even par round put Reinke at three-under for the championship. In the classic the leader coming into the day, Doug Capson, increased his lead. Capson shot a second round 80 giving him a three-shot lead over competitor Mike Haines. Haines duplicated his first round, shooting another 82. Ryan Turner, after a second round 84, only sits five-shots back of Capson. The classic will finish with the third round of play on Sunday.
