Eubank Clinches Spot in U.S. Amateur
KUNA- 36 holes in a day is always a daunting task. Today’s competitors had to not only play 36 but also had to face the additional elements of heat in the 90’s and the pressure of qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship, hosted at Rivera Country Club.
Twenty competitors began the day at Falcon Crest Golf Course contending for the single qualifying spot for the championship. Following the first round of the day Kavan Eubank found himself in first with six-under 66. Eubank was trailed closely by a pair of 67’s from Keynan Fanslow and Grant Johnson. The first round saw ten individuals tally scores of even par or better, ready to jump an opportunity if Eubank faltered.
In the second round Josh Gliege decided to take things into his own hand, charging up the leaderboard. Gliege recorded four birdies on the front nine. Gliege continued to fire on the back with three more birdies, totaling nine-under for the qualifier. Keynan Fanslow also chipped his way towards the top in the second round. Fanslow strung together three straight birdies on holes 2, 3, and 4. But, Fanslow’s play cooled down on the back nine of his second round, finishing his day at nine-under.
Eubank began his second round firing on all cylinders, with a birdie on hole 1 and an eagle on hole 2. Eubank was off to the races and did not look back, shooting six-under on the front nine and did not look back. Eubank totaled thirteen-under on the day, his hot play was enough to outlast the long day and charges from his competitors, securing his spot at Riviera.
The tie between Fanslow and Gliege at nine-under forced a playoff between the two for the first alternate position. Fanslow beat out his competitor in the first playoff hole, he will be the first alternate, and Gliege will be the second.
