Lampson goes Wire-to-Wire in State Amateur Championship

KUNA- Falcon Crest Golf Course played host to a phenomenal Idaho Amateur Men’s State Championship. Three days of excellent weather and little to no wind created excellent scoring conditions for the field in the 54-hole endeavor.Beginning the third and final round Trevor Lampson held a 2 shot lead over his nearest competitors Skyler Eubank and Hunter Ostrom. The three players began their days all taking 4’s on the first three holes. But, after Lampson’s birdies on hole four and six it appeared the California Baptist University student was going to run away with the championship moving into the back nine. As it turned out the back nine which followed was anything but mundane.

Carson Barry began his day in the third to last group sitting at -3 after the first two rounds. As Lampson was settling into his round Barry began his march up the leaderboard. For Barry it began on the fourth hole stringing together four straight birdies in the middle of his front nine. That run along with a birdie on hole number nine giving Barry -8 at the turn, five strokes back of Lampson. Barry’s run did not stop there tallying birdies on eleven, twelve, fifteen, and sixteen. Just like that Barry was only one stroke back of Lampson heading to the seventeenth.

Lampson took the tee on sixteen likely not know that Barry ahead on the green had just closed the gap to one. But Lampson’s sixteenth did not go ideal including some tree troubles and a visit to the greenside bunker. Lampson took bogey, and for a moment Barry and Lampson were all square. Less than thirty seconds later that was no longer the case, Barry took bogey on seventeen. Barry on eighteen appeared to know the situation leaving his tee shot only 10 yards short of the large lake which sits between the player and the green. Barry stepped up, hit his iron, but much to his dismay watched it fly over the green landing on the back hill. Barry proceeded to take another bogey on eighteen leaving himself at -10, the low round of the day with -7. Lampson’s tee shot found a very similar spot to Barry’s. Lampson’s approach though found the green and gave him a 15 foot putt at birdie. To put the icing on the cake Lampson rolled in the birdie attempt dropping him to -13 on the championship.

Lampson’s consistent play over the weekend was able to fend off the hot play of Barry. Lampson’s 67-67-69 was enough to go wire-to-wire clinching the 88th Idaho Amateur State Championship.
